Our History
Welcome! Boll Weevil Farm is a Heritage Farm nestled in south Tuscaloosa county. The original property was a Land Grant, given to Chris' Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Joseph Wright for military service in the War of 1812. The original homestead was established in 1852 by Reuben and Polly Ann (Wright) Freeman and became locally known as the Freeman Farm.

Today, approximately 80 acres of the original property remains in the family, 30 of which comprise Boll Weevil Farm. The last old family home, "the Old House" is a log cabin of virgin timber and built in 1890 still stands today. During World War II, hard times and rationing forced the last of the family to move from the farm to seek a better living rearer to town. The farm remained vacant, the land farrow and returned to the wild until 1978 when Chris' parents built a log cabin, using locally sourced timber. In 2002, Chris and Danette also settled down on the homestead.

Biologists with strong backgrounds in conservation, we consider ourselves stewards of this land and the native flora and fauna that it supports. In addition to rolling pastures there are diverse wooded areas, spring fed beaver pond and wetlands. Many native wildflowers including milkweed (important for Monarch Butterflies) flourish here. White Tailed Deer browse pastures alongside cattle and horses. Eastern Bluebirds raise families in specially made boxed along the fence lines. Pileated Woodpeckers are quite common in our dead and dying trees. Barred Owls and Whippoorwills can be heard at night. Occasionally, even visitors who are not so welcomed appear... Copperhead snakes and Coyotes!

Why the funny name? As a nod to cotton crops of the past and in honor of our son, Matthew, who was born in Enterprise, Alabama (home of the Boll Weevil Monument) we decided on the unique name of Boll Weevil Farm.

Here at Boll Weevil Farm we continually strive to produce healthy, happy and well cared for animals. We are particularly committed to heritage breeds and breed conservation in general. Raising our animals as naturally as possible, we believe in and support real animal welfare.
We hope you enjoy your virtual tour of Boll Weevil Farm.
